William Barcroft Junior School is committed to safeguarding and ensuring the welfare of all our pupils.
We keep children safe by:
- Having an up to date Safeguarding and Child Protection policy.
- Having three identified members of staff, and one identified Governor, who have responsibility for safeguarding
- Providing a team of 3 learning mentors focusing purely on safeguarding pupils and providing pastoral support
- Completing the safer recruitment and checking procedures necessary to ensure all staff have the suitability to work with children and young people.
- Having an open-door policy where concerns can be shared in confidence.
- Having a safeguarding culture that is embedded through ongoing CPD ensuring all our staff have up to date safeguarding and child protection training.
- Sharing information with appropriate agencies if we have concerns. We will ensure that our concerns about our pupils are discussed with parents and carers first, unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to the child’s welfare.
- We actively support the Government’s Prevent Agenda to counter radicalism and extremism.

Operation Encompass
William Barcroft is part of a project run by Humberside Police called Operation Encompass. The project aims to support children who are affected by Domestic Abuse.
As a result, following any domestic abuse incident, the police will contact the school and communicate relevant and necessary information to the DSL and DDSL. This will ensure that the school is made aware (usually before the start of the next school day) and can subsequently provide support in a way that means the child feels safe.

Online Safety
There are a range of potential harms that come with using the internet. Categories include:
- Content
Being exposed to illegal, inappropriate, or harmful content. - Contact
Being subjected to harmful online interaction with other users. - Conduct
Online behaviour that increases the likelihood of, or causes, harm. - Commerce
Risks such as online gambling, inappropriate advertising, phishing and financial scams.
As part of our teaching of online safety in school, children are taught:
- that people sometimes behave differently online, including by pretending to be someone they are not
- that the same principles apply to online relationships as to face-to-face relationships, including the importance of respect for others
- the rules and principles for keeping safe online: how to recognise risks, harmful content and contact, and how to report them
- how to critically consider their online friendships and sources of information
- how information and data is shared and used online
There are well-publicised concerns regarding access to material on the internet that would be unsuitable for pupils. Whilst it is impossible to ensure that pupils will not access such material, the Academy is taking all reasonable steps to minimise a pupil’s access to unsuitable material. These include.
- Use of a filtered Internet Service to prevent access to internet sites with undesirable material (Smoothwall)
- The requirement that all Internet access during school hours will be supervised by a member of staff or another responsible adult
- As an essential part of the curriculum, all children are taught about online safety, across the year and when topics become prevalent.
